An effort made by Henry Clay to please both the North and the South. It abolished slave trade in Washington D.C and made it easier for southerners to return slaves.

Congress let Nebraska and Kansas vote if they were to be a slave or a free state. Kansas chose to be a slave state, and violence broke out. This also led to the formation of the Republican party (who believed the spread of slavery was against the US free labor system).

The Supreme Court ruled that African Americans did not have the same rights as federal citizens. It said that being on free territory did not make a slave free. A particular man, Dred Scott, was not granted freedom although he was on free territory.

Brown captured citizens and hoped that the African Americans would join the raid, leading to weapons being supplied to slaves, but he was captured. It was an attempt to arouse a general slave uprising.

Lee's second invasion in the North was stopped. The Union wins this battle and it is a turning point in the Civil War. Lincoln gave a speech here dedicated to the soldiers that died at this battle.

He pardoned most confederates who swore allegiance to the union, and he said that states could form new governments. However, he is impeached due to violating the Tenure of Office Act and for accused crimes.

A lot of scandals and corruption occurred during his presidency, and he was better as a military hero then a president. During his presidency, the 15th Amendment was ratified, and it allowed for male African Americans to vote.
