  • Battle of Bull Run/ Manassas

    The cause of this battle was the North set out to meet the South in Virginia but the south met them halfway. The North planned to attack again. The south figured their plan out and counter-attacked the north. After this President Lincoln said the Union army should be trained. This is significant because it showed the people and the army how bloody and hard this war will be.
  • Siege of Fort Sumter

    The cause of this event was Major Robert Anderson occupied the unfished fort in Dec. 1860 after the S.C. cession. President Lincoln made plans to resupply the fort. But before that, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard bombarded Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. After a 34-hour exchange of fire, Anderson and 86 soldiers surrendered the fort on April 13. This was significant because this battle started the civil war.
  • Battle of Antietam

    Lee marched into Maryland with his Army. A copy of his detailed battle plans was misplaced and then discovered, wrapped around three cigars, by Union soldiers. It was learned that Lee’s army was divided between Harpers Ferry in West Virginia and Hagerstown in Maryland. General McClellan, had the chance, if he moved quickly, he could deafeat all of the men. McClellan saw his opportunity but waited eighteen hours before acting. The battle gave Lincoln the strength to issue his Emancipation Proc.

    President Lincoln first proposed the Emancipation Proclamation to his cabinet in the summer of 1862. His cabinet members told him to wait for a union victory. so he did wait and after the battle of Antietam happened he gave the speech five days later. This changes the focus of the war from America being together to slavery.
