In the election of 1860, Lincoln was elected and slave owners started to take the Confederate side thinking they would lose their slaves. -
Secession of the South
Southerners were strting to think the government was becoming too strong. South Carolina was the first southern state to secess. Four months later, six other states secessed too. -
Ft. Sumter
Located in Charleston Harbor, SC, this site is important because it was where the first shots were fired of the Civil War. US major Robert Anderson occupied the unfinished fort in December 1660,following South Carolina's secession from the union. After Lincoln planned to send supplies,General P.G.T. Beuregard bombarded Ft. Sumter on April 12, 1861. After a 34 hour exchange of fire, Anderson surrendured the fort on April 13. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This was the order that freed slaves in the 1860's. It was also important because without it we woud still have slavery in the south. -
Battle of Gettysburg
It was a major turning point of the wat. It lasted from July 1st-3rd 1863. It was the bloodiest battle because there were almost 50 thousand casualties.
