  • Scott v. Sanford (1857)

    Scott v. Sanford (1857)
    Dred Scott was a slave and wanted to pay his master for his family's freedom. They went to court and the court ruled that Scott was considered property, and they couldn't deprive his master of his property.
  • Reconstruction (1865-1877)

    The nation correcting civil and human rights abuses that had lingered in American society for a century.
    Reconstruction Amendments:
    13th) End of slavery
    14th) granted citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to African Americans and slaves who had been emancipated after the American Civil War
    15th) Protects citizens from having their right to vote denied because of race
    24th) Abolished a poll tax for all federal elections
  • Plessy v. Ferguson (1896)

    Plessy was a black man who decided to sit in the white section of a train. He refused to get up so he was arrested.
  • 19th Amendment

    This amendment gave women the right to vote (suffrage).
  • Scottsboro Boys (1931-1937)

    Scottsboro Boys (1931-1937)
    In 1931, nine African American Boys were riding in the white section of a frieght train. They were later accused of raping two white women. They were given a trial and two retrials, but their lawyer had not spoken to them before the trials, and did nothing to prove the boys innocent. This violated their 14th Amendment right to secure counsel before defense. They were tried by an all-white jury and proven guilty.
