Ececutive order 9981
Truman signed Executive order 9981. This states " It is hereby declared to be the policy of the President that there shall be equality of treatment and opportunity for all persons in the armed services without regard to race, color, religion, or national origin." -
Brown v. Board of Education
Supreme court rules agains Brown v. Board. They agree that segregation in public schools is unconstitutional. Paves way along the desegregation path. -
Emmet Till murder
Emmet till, a teenage black boy is murdered for allegedly flirting with a married white women. He was kidnapped, beaten, shot then dumped in river. -
Rosa Parks
In Montgomery Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat at the front of the bus and was arrested. This started the bus boycott whitch a year later made buses desegregated. -
Little Rock nine
In little Rock Arkansas nine black students attending a public school were blocked off by govener orval Faubus. Presdient Eisenhower sent in federal troops and the national guard to try and resolve the conflict. -
Woolsworth lunch counter
Four black students from a college in North Carolina began a sit-in, at a segregated lunch counter. Four months later, they were served food at the same place. -
SNCC
The Student Non-Violent coordinating commitee is started at Shaw University. This provided young blacks with a place in the civil rights movement. It soon grew to be a very big commitee -
Freedom Riders
Groups of blacks and white volunteers took bus trips through the deep south, testing desegregation laws that had just been passed on interstate bussing systems. Some of them would be attacked by angry mobs. They called themselves freedom riders. -
James Meredith
James Meredith beomes the first black student enrolled in University of Mississippi. Large riots break out which lead President Kennedy to send over 5000 federal troops. -
MLK sent to jail
Martin Luther King Junior is arrested and sent to jail during an anti-segregation protest in Birmingham Alabama. There he writes "letters from Birmingham Jail" which is about the moral duty individuals have to disobey unjust laws. -
I Have A Dream
In Washington D.C. about 200,000 people join the March on Washington. There is where Martin Luther gives his famous "I Have A Dream" speech -
Car Bomb
In Birmingham Alabama four young girls who were attending sunday school were killed by a car bomb. This started a riot which lead to the killings of two more young black youths. -
Poll tax
the 24th ammendment abolishes the poll tax. This tax was first made in 11 southern states after reconstruction to make it difficult for poor blacks to vote. -
Freedom Summer
A network of civil rights groups called the COFO, tries to register black voters in whats called the freedom summer. It also tried delegates to the Democratic National Convention, here they would protest. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Presdient Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This was the largest legislationg since the reconstruction. It prohibited discrimination, and allowed the federal government to enforce powers to desegregate. -
Three Civil Rights Workers
Two white, and one black civil rights workers are found dead in a dam. After the investigantion found out they had been arrested by the police for speeding, then given to the ku klux klan and killed. -
Malcom X
Founder of Afro-American Unity Malcom x, is shot to death. -
Bloody Sunday
A march is put it in place in Montgomery Alabama, they are stopped at a bridge by a police blockade. That day is known as "bloody sunday" becuse the police used tear gas, whips , and clubs agasint them. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
The voting rights act of 1965 was passed by congress. This made voting for southern blacks easier. -
Race Riots
In Watts California, race riots erupt. They lst seven days. -
Executive Order 11246
President Johnson issues executive order 11246. This order enforces affirmitive action toward monority emplyees in all aspects of hiring and employment.
