13th Amendment
Abolished slavery and involuntary servitude except for in the case of punishment. It finally freed the blacks from free labor. -
14th Amendment
Declared that everyone born or naturalized in the USA are citizens of the USA. It finally gave blacks the same "citizen" status that the whites had gotten this entire time. This amendment depicted that colored people were gaining rights and could not be deprived of life, liberty, or property. -
15th Amendment
Declared the right to vote to citizens regardless of race, color, or previous servitude. This gave previous slaves the right to vote just like normal citizens and gave colored people the right to vote just like whites. -
Plessey vs. Ferguson
Ended unlawful discrimination. This included things like the "one drop rule." Minorities were slowly starting to get a few more benefits. -
19th Amendment
Granted all American woman suffrage. It ended decades of their petitioning and was a huge step forward towards gender equality which is also part of the Civil Rights Movement. -
Executive Order of 1948
Truman signs this executive order (9981) which calls for equal treatment and opportunity for everyone in the armed services regardless of their race, color or religion. This fulfilled a lot of people's desires of joining the armed services when they couldn't due to their race, color or religion forbidding it. -
Brown vs. Board of Education
The supreme court rules on the Brown v Board of Education in Topeka and declares segregation in public schools as unconstitutional. This allowed colored people to have a better chance at a more equal education. -
Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat
Rosa Parks is arrested for breaking a segretation law. Her fight inspired the Montgomery Bus Boycott which began on the same day and it leads to the supreme court ruling the segregation laws as unconstitutional. This allowed blacks to have the right to be treated equally in most places. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Started with Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat. At the time, 75% of the bus riders were black and a good number of them vowed to give up the public bus system. This effectively worked as it made the white bus owners lose a lot of money. It lead to the supreme court ruling Montgomery's segregation laws as unconstitutional. -
Civil Rights Act of 1957
Aimed to ensure that all African Americans could exercise their right to vote. It was the first civil rights bill enacted since reconstruction. This actually stimulated blacks to go out and let their voice be heard. -
24th Amendment
This amendment prohibited congress from forcing a poll tax on federal elections. High poll taxes were mandatorily added to the ballots for African Americans in order to prevent them from voting. This amendment opened the door for a huge amount of blacks to be able to vote without paying something that they couldn't afford. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
Forbid sexual and racial discrimination in the work field. Employers could not discriminate when it came to hiring, promoting and firing. Gave minorities and women a more secure feeling with their jobs. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
Eliminated a bunch of ways that congress tried to prevent blacks from voting. These ways included literacy tests and the grandfather junction. More blacks were able to freely vote :) -
Civil Rights Act of 1968
Prevented the refusal of dwellings to people based on their race, color, religion, gender, or national origin. This allowed minorities to feel more equal to others because they could not be denied a place to live and could live amongst every other citizen.
