  • Congress passes the first Civil Rights Act

    The first law that defined U.S. citizenship and affirming that all citizens are equally protected by the law.
  • 14th Amendment

    Granted citizenship and equal civic and legal rights to African Americans and slaves who had been emancipated after the American Civil War, including them under the umbrella phrase "all persons born or naturalized in the United States."
  • 15th Amendment

    Gives African American men the right to vote.
  • The first Women's Suffrage Amendment

    Introduced in Congress, but was defeated. Took 41 years to be passed by both houses of Congress.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    U.S. Supreme Court decision that upheld the constitutionality of racial segregation under the "separate but equal" doctrine.
  • NAACP is founded

    NAACP is founded
    Created by a group of people who were white, black and Jews to fight for civil rights in the U.S.
  • 19th Amendment

    19th Amendment
    Passed by Congress in June 1919, ratified on August 18, 1920; gives all American women the right to vote.
  • Shelly v. Kraemer

    United States Supreme Court case holding that the Fourteenth Amendment Protection Clause prohibits racially restrictive housing covenants from being enforced.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    U.S. Supreme Court case that ruled public schools are to be integrated.
  • Rosa Parks refuses to give up bus seat

    Rosa Parks refuses to give up bus seat
    Refused to give seat to white man and was arrested. Her actions inspired the leaders of the local Black community to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott
  • 24th Amendment

    Prohibits the federal and state governments from imposing poll taxes before a citizen could participate in a federal election.

    A United States Supreme Court case dealing with the busing of students to promote integration in public school.
  • 26th Amendment

    Reduce the age to vote to 18 years old.
  • Proposition 209 - California

    Also known as the California Civil Rights Initiative states "The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group, on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting."
