Literacy Tests
This was an exam to determine if a person meets literacy requirements to vote or serve in armed forces. This test involved reading and writing. This test also had some questions that were mean to confuse people so it was difficult to pass. -
13th Amendment
This amendment abolished slavery. -
14th Amendment
This amendment granted citizenship to all people born or naturalized in the United States. -
Jim Crow
These laws started in 1870 and continued on for years, These laws allowed racial segregation in southern states. -
15th Amendment
This amendment granted African American men the right to vote. -
Poll Taxes
Paying a poll tax was a prerequisite to the registration for voting. The tax emerged in some states in the late 19th century as part of the Jim Crow laws. -
Plessy vs. Ferguson
Plessy sat in an all- white railroad car. He was arrested for violating 1890 Lousiana statute for segregation. -
19th Amendment
Right of women sufferage. -
Korematsu v. United States
This was a Supreme Court case that decided the constitutionality of Executive Order 9066, which ordered Japanese Americans into internment camps during World War II regardless of citizenship. -
Sweatt vs. Painter
This changed "seperate but equal". Black man was not allowed into Law School in Texas. This made separate law school for blacks that did not compare to the white law school. -
Brown v. Board of Education
This said that having black and white schools was unconstitutional. This violated Equal Protection Clasue in 14th amendment. Helped integration throughout communities. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Starting in 1955, the Montgomery Bus Boycott was a protest against the policies of racial segregation on public transit systems in Montgomery, Alabama. -
24th Amendment
This amendment prohibits any poll tax in elections for federal officals. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
This act prohibited discrimination in public places, integrated schools and public places, and outlawed employment discrimination. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
This act outlawed discriminatory voting practices illegal, including literacy tests and poll taxes. -
Robert Kennedy Speech in Indianapolis upon death of MLK
Robert Kennedy broke the news of King's death to a gathering of African Americans in Indianapolis. The gathering was oringinally a planned campaign rally for Robert Kennedy's 1968 Democratic nomination for president. -
Reed v. Reed
This was about a divorced couple who fought over deceased sons estate. Idaho codes infavor of makes is unconstitutional. Sally Reed won. -
Equal Rights Amendment
Equal Rights for women. -
Regents of the University of California v. Bakke
Bakke was said to be too old to go to college. This violated rights of white applicants. This helped improve diversity. -
Bowers v. Hardwrick
Criminalising against homeosexual sex. This violated right to privacy. 17 years after this case court over ruled ruling, -
Americans with Disabilities Act
Provents discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, transportation, public accomodations, communications, and government activities. -
Lawrence v. Texas
This took down sodomy law in the 14 amendment. Same sex sexual activity is legal. -
Affirmative Action
Employment equality. Helped disadvantaged group. -
Fisher v. Texas
This was a Supreme Court case where affirmative action admissions policy of the University of Texas at Austin was decided if it was constitutional or not. It was decided constitutional. -
Baskin v. Bogan
This case challenged the state's refusal to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples.The decision of the case legalized same-sex marriage in Indiana.
