Dred Scott v. Sandford
Dred Scott and his wife fought in the stance in which they were safe from enslavement due to their residence in a "free area", unfortunately their case was not in their favor, in a majority opinion in which claimed that enslaved citizens were not "real citizens", therefore had no rights protected by federal or state governments.. this was a main cause leading to the civil war and was eventually overturned within 13 and 14th amendment. -

13th Admendment
Amendment ratified in late December, 1865 in which helped overturn the Dred Scott v. Stanford decision, also declaring the establishment of slavery. However did also state "except as punishment for crime" which later on created loopholes for those still for slavery -
14th Admendment
Amendment ratified in 1868, Also contributing to overturn on Dred Scott v. Standford stating that any natural born or naturalized citizens had an equal protection of laws and rights, also containing other things such as apportionment, and civil war debt. -
15th Admendment
Amendment ratified in early 1870 in which granted rights to African American men, this along with the 13th and 14th amendments were the 3 Reconstruction amendments -
Plessy V Ferguson
A case decided that upheld the constitutionality racial segregation under "Separate But Equal Doctrine" This in which became the legal base for any racial segregation case in the US for the next 50 years -
19th Admendment
ratified in August, this was another huge milestone in American history, granting Women the right to vote although it still took years after words of protest and other acts to nationally achieve this. -
White Primaries
This was a racially motivated practice where in certain areas only whites were allowed to vote in order to diminish the effect on the minority vote in elections. The voting rights act helped put an end to this as well as the Allwright case (1944) in which deemed it unconstitutional. -
Brown V. Board Of Education
This case basically ended the ruling base of Plessy V. Ferguson, deeming that state laws that have separate but equal laws in schools are still unconstitutional. -
Affrimative Action
Affirmative Action was very relevant during the Civil Rights movement and was basically positive discrimination, making things like getting employment, training programs and other helpful financial aides to women and minorities in the US. -
Poll Taxes
These taxes were imposed in order to limit any minority and poorer people when they went to vote, it stated that they had to pay a fee when voting in national elections, this is the reason the 24th amendment was ratified to prohibit poll taxes. -
24th admendment
ratified in early 1964, congress passed this amendment that outlawed poll taxes as a voting requirement for federal elections, which effected many minorities at the time, making it easier and more fair for everyone to vote -
Civil rights act of 1964
Congress passing of a Public law in which PROHIBITS discrimination in any form on the basis of race, sex, religion, origin, this was a major turning point in America, outlawing any previous acts and laws against minorities. -
Voting rights Act of 1965
This act passed helped put an end into discriminatory voting practices, that mainly took place within the southern states, that prohibited minorities to vote because of limited abilities. -
Reed V. Reed
Decided in 1971 under the Equal Protection clause of the 14th amendment that prohibited discriminatory treatment on the basis of sex. -
Equal Rights Admendment
This constitutional amendment that was basically the final and most prompt equality act that made it so all women and other minorities were guaranteed equal rights. -
Regents of the University of California v. Bakke
The Supreme court ruling in which the use of racial quotes in universities was unconstitutional. But also ruling protected some forms of affirmative action in order to accept more minor-ital students -
Bowers V Hardwick
This decision ruled that the 14th amendment does not protect the ability from a state criminalizing private sexual conduct with same sex couples -
Americans with disabilites act
An act incorporated in which prohibited any discrimination towards people with disabilities. -
Moter Voter Act
This act was basically implemented in order to simplify Americans registration process to make voting easier and to maintain registering. -
Lawrence V Texas
This was the case that basically overturned the Bowers v. Hard wick case, in which made same-sex activity legal across every state in the US -
Obergefell v. Hodges
This case was a final stepping stone for gay - marriage rights in which ruled that it is a citizens fundamental right to be able to marry the person of your choice regardless of sex.
