    Native Araucanian people resist, sucessfully the first attack from Spain.

    Pedro de Valdivia

    He leads the Spanish conquest of Chile. He founds Santiago, now the capital of Chile
  • Chile wins Independance from Spain

    The Battles of Cohacabuco and Maipu begin the defeat of the Spanish army. Jose de San Martin and Bernardo O'Higgins lead the Chileans.
  • Civil War

    Civil war between liberals and conservatives begins. O'Higgins forced to resign.
  • Chile goes to war with Peru and Bolivia

    Chile ends up winning Bolivia's only sea port and some areas of Peru.
  • A New Constitution

    This constitution is a large step for Chile giving more rights to workers and stating that the president it to be elected by the people.
  • The Communist Party Banned

    After a lot of bumping heads with socialists and radicals, the communist party is banned.
  • Chaiten

    A dormant volcano erupts.
  • EARTHQUAKE!

    An 8.8 magnitude earthquake, the largest in 50 years, causes widespread damage.
