Child Development

  • Period: 1 CE to 1 CE

    Birth - 3 Months old

    Baby can perform basic motions and reflexes
    -Starts utilizing reflexes like grasping and sucking
    -Head falls back if unsupported, fists are usually clenched
  • Period: 1 CE to 1 CE

    3 months - 5 months old

    Baby becomes strong and can better utilize major muscles
    -can roll themselves over and crawl
    -will put stuff in their mouths to touch and percieve
  • Period: 1 CE to 1 CE

    6 months - 9 months old

    Baby is more mobile
    -begins to crawl/ going through the crawling motions
    -starts to reach and pull on furniture and other objects
    -can transfer items between hands
  • Period: 1 CE to 2

    9 months - 1 year old

    Baby will begin to support oneself when sitting
    -begins to walk with assistance
    -can roll, throw, move objects
    -can start to pick objects up with thumb and single fingers
  • Period: 2 to 3

    1 year old - 2 years old

    Baby starts to become independent in movement
    -will begin to walk without help from parents
    -can pick objects up while standing
    -can traverse a set of stairs with little assistance
  • Period: 3 to 4

    2 years - 3 years old

    Baby develops faster coordination
    -begins movements like running, jumping, and standing on one leg
    -can move small objects with greater control
    -can operate a pencil/pen with thumb and forefinger, not with a fist
  • Period: 4 to 5

    3 years - 4 years old

    Child has improved movement and coordination than previous years of life
    -can throw/catch a ball
    -can slide by themselves
    -can draw shapes
  • Period: 5 to 7

    4 years - 6 years old

    Child builds confidence in movements as their coordination continue to improve
    -can jump, skip, walk backwards easier
    -can traverse a set of stairs alternating feet every step
  • Period: 8 to 13

    7 years old - 12 years old

    Child experiences significant improvement in motor skills, allowing them to skate and/or learn how to ride a bike
    -Girls at this age experience major growth spurts
