His first feature-length picture was "The Kid". "The Kid" is thought to be influenced by Chaplin's own childhood and was the first film to combine comedy and drama. Then appeared "A Woman of Paris" (1923), "The Gold Rush" (1925), and "The Circus" (1928). All his films were silent films.

Chaplin had originally been nominated for Best Production, Best Director in a Comedy Picture, Best Actor and Best Writing (Original Story) for The Circus. However, the Academy decided to withdraw his name from all the competitive categories and instead give him a special award.
