Hooke 1663-1665
Discovered the cell;examined very thin slices of cork and saw multitudes of tiny pores; no form of nucleus and other organelles; didn't know the real structure or function. He used the microscope invented by Zacahrias Janssen to see the cells. -

Cell Theory
-
Leevwenhoek 1673
First to observe and describe single cell organisms; referred to them as animalcules ( now called microorganisms). First to observe muscle fibers, bacteria, spermatozoa, and blood flow in capillaries. After seeing Hooke's microscope, he started developing his own, consisting of simple powerful magnifying glasses. -
Brown 1833
Discovered nucleus in plant cells. Used microscope in a way that no one had used previously. Was able to describe the cytoplasmic functions within a cell; able to distinguish angiosperm and gymnosperms. -
Schwann 1838-1839
1838-Stated that plant and animal tissues were composed of cells.1839-Stated that all tissues are made of cells, and laid the foundation for the cell theory. Also discovered the enzyme pepsin and worked on fermentation. Created the cell theory. -
Schleiden 1838
Stated that plants grew by adding new cells. He used a microscope to study plants. Schwann later extended this theory to animal tissues. -
Virchow 1855
Stated that all cells resulted from the division of previous cells. Also introduced cell pathology, stating that diseases do not affect the entire organism, only a specific localized group of cells, which made it easier to diagnose and treat illnesses. -
