Period: to
Robert Hooke
Lifespan. I chose this because his book was the first important work devoted to microscopical observation. -
Micrographia Was Published
Robert Hooke publishes Micrographia which became the first important work devoted to microscopical observation (This is also why I chose this). -
Letter Sent to Royal Society
Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek sent a letter to the Royal Society that the particles he saw under his microscope were living organisms. I chose this because this helped open up a lot of new investigations and discoveries. -
Plants are Composed Of Cells
Matthias Jakob Schleiden suggested that every structural element of plants is composed of cells or their products. I chose this because it revealed important information about plants and lead to the same discovery for animals. -
Animals are Composed of Cells
After Schleiden's conclusion about plants, the same conclusion was made about animals the year after by Theodor Schwann. I chose this because it shows a similarity between plants and animals and it was discovered the year after Schleiden's discovery. -
Deiters' Book
A posthumously published book by Karl Deiters contains descriptions and drawings of nerve cells. I chose this because it was studied by using histological methods and microdissections made with tiny needles under a microscope which I thought was cool. -

Microscopy Improvements
The development of the microtome technique and the use of new fixing methods and dyes helped to greatly improve microscopy. I chose this because the development of microscopy is important to cell theory. -
Mitosis
Walther Flemming introduced the word "Mitosis." and gave a description of its various processes. I chose this because mitosis is an important vocabulary word when learning about cells. -
Ergastoplasm (Endoplasmic Reticulum)
The term "Ergastoplasm" was introduced in 1897. I chose this because "Ergastoplasm" isn't a known word, but it is an important one.
