Cell Theory

  • Robert Hooke

    Robert Hooke
Rober Hook first introduced the word "cell" when writing about his observations of cork using a microscope. He noticed little compartments inside the cork, which he called cells. Use your microscope to observe cork and see what Robert Hooke noted 346 years ago. More Information
  • Anton Van Leeuwenhoek

    Anton Van Leeuwenhoek
Anton Van Leeuwenhoek enjoyed exploring different things under the microscope including water and teeth shavings. He was the first to describe little animals using the microscope. He called these little animals, animalcules, and was the first to describe blood cells, sperm cells, and bacteria. More Info
  • Mathias Jakob Shcleiden

    Mathias Jakob Shcleiden
Mathias Jakob Schleiden was a botanists (a scientist that studies plants) who first stated that plants were constructed of cells.
  • Theodore Schwann

    Theodore Schwann
In 1839 Theodor Schwann stated that all animals were constructed of cells. This was an addition to Mathias Jacob Shleiden's belief that all plants were constructed of cells.
  • First Cell Theory (Firsty Try)

    First Cell Theory (Firsty Try)
Together, Theodor Schwann and Mathias Jakob Schleiden proposed the 3 tenets (or beleifs) of cell theory: 1) All organisms are constructed of cells
    2) Cells function independently as well as part of whole being made up of many cells
    3) Cells form spontaneously (later proven wrong)
  • Cell Theory (2nd Try)

    Cell Theory (2nd Try)
In 1855, Rudolph Virchow revised cell theory. He observed that cells come from cells that already exist. This was different from Theodor Schwann and Mathias Jakob Schleiden's beleif that cell just spontaneously appeared. Now, cell theory stated that: 1) All organisms are constructed of cells
    2) Cells function independently as well as part of whole being made
    3) All cells come from already existing cells More Info
  • Modern Cell Theory

    Modern Cell Theory
    Today, cell theory claims that:
    1. all known living things are made up of cells.
    2. the cell is structural & functional unit of all living things.
    3. all cells come from pre-existing cells by division.
    4. cells contains hereditary information which is passed from cell to cell during cell division.
    5. All cells are basically the same in chemical composition.
    6. all energy flow of life occurs within the cell.
