Constitution of 1824
The Mexican Constitution was made in 1824, and it was almost identical to the US Constitution, except they were forced to a religion, Catholicism. The Seguin Family did a huge part to help this to happen. But the Anglo people didn't have a say, which made them mad. -
Fredonian Rebellion
The Mexican government had canceled the Edwards brothers empresario contract to bring 800 families to Texas. In response Edwards declared the "Republic of Fredonia" as an independent state of Mexico. -
Mier y Teran Report
The main reason for this expedition was to Increase the amount of Mexican Control. He also wanted to increase trade, increase Mexican and European settlers, and send more Mexican troops. -
Guerrero Decree
President Vincente R. Guerrero abolished slavery throughout Texas and Mexico. This put a check on United States immigration, so the population wouldn't be mostly United States immigrants -
Law of April 6, 1830
This law forbade the further introduction to slaves in Mexico and intended to suspend empresario contacts. Even though this is a law that should be enforced, it was kind of blown off, and Stephen F. Austin was able to go against this law, and not get in trouble. -
Conflict of Anahuac
The Mexican Government sent Colonial Juan Davis Bradhurn to set up a garrison on Galveston Bay to enforce tariffs. The Anglo settlers who refused to pay were arrested. -
Turtle Bayou Resolutions
After learning that Santa Anna was the new president, sixteen Anglo American delegates,thinking Anna would reform the Constitution of 1824, made four resolutions and stated that the attacks at Anahuac was not Anglo settlers fighting the Mexican garrison but federalist fighting centralists. -
Battle of Velasco
The Battle of Velasco was most likely the first case of bloodshed between Texas and Mexico. Henry Smith and John Austin led settlers to receive a cannon to use against Mexican forces at Anahuac.Mexican forces tried to stop them and then a battle broke out, however Mexico was forced to surrender after running out of ammunition. -
Convention of 1832
After the prior disturbances and battles, fifty-five delegates met and elected Stephan F. Austin president and made resolutions such as tariff exemptions, moderation of Law of April 6,1830,more United Staes immigrants, government donated land for schools, and separate statehood from Coahuila. -
Convention of 1833
The Convention met at San Felipe on April 1, the day that Santa Anna took control. William H. Wharton asked for adequate Indian defense, judicial reform, improvement in mail service, etc. They also proposed to split Coahuila and Texas. It adjourned on April 13. -
SFA Goes to Mexico CIty
Stephen F. Austin went to Mexico City in April to meet with Santa Anna to present the Texas resolutions. When Austin reached Anna was away and didn't meet with him till October when Anna returned. Santa allowed U.S. immigration, lowered tariffs, but would not separate Coahuila from Texas. Before returning to Texas Stephen was arrested and spent a year in jail and returned in July 1835. -
The Consulation
In Oct. of 1835, delegates met to debate between war and and peace with Mexico. They agreed to the Declaration of Nov. 7, 1835 which pledged loyalty to Mexico, but warned that if the Constitution of 1824 was not restored, they would rebel against them. They also created a provisional government and the commander of the army. Branch T. Archer was named the President of The Consultation and favored Independence, but focused on resolving the differences.
