Missouri Compromise
The government needed a way to balance the power between the slave and free states without the risk of upsetting Americans. they proposed to admit Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. The bottom of the Missouri Border would be the boundary line- north of line being free and below the line being slave states. many southerners were outraged by this compromise because it gave Congress the ability to make laws about slavery.
