Missouri Compromise
Missouri admitted as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Created a geographical line to separate the north and the south (slave and free states). -
Compromise of 1850
Senator Stephen A. Douglas (Illinois) decided that congress would vote on these 5 proposals separately and this would end the argument once and for all. -
Fugitive Slave Act
Required all citizens to help catch runaways, whether in the south or the north. Anyone who aided a fugitive slave could be fined or imprisoned. -
Kansas - Nebraska Act
Repealed the Missouri compromise and allowed settlers of these regions to vote (popular sovereignty) on whether or not to allow slavery in their states. -
Formation of Republican Party
The government should ban slavery from new territories. Further divided the north (mainly Republican) and the south (mainly Democrat.) -
Dred Scott Decision
Slave Dred Scott sued the U.S. government for freedom. Supreme court rejects Scott's proposal, causing strong reactions from the public- and divinding the country even more. -
