    The Missouri Compromise was a law that admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. It also made slavery past the southern boader line of Missouri illegal.The effect on the Civil War was that it flared up tensions between the two regions in trying to decide which states would be free and which would have slaves.
  • Dred Scott v. Sanford

    Dred Scott v. Sandford, 60 U.S. 393 (1857), also known as the Dred Scott Decision, was a landmark decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. It made two main rulings. The first ruling was that African-Americans were not citizens, and therefore had no standing to sue in federal court. The second ruling was that the federal government had no power to regulate slavery in any territory acquired subsequent to the creation of the United States.
  • Raid on Harper's Ferry

    The raid on Harper's ferry was an attempt by the white abolitionist John Brown to start an armed slave revolt in 1859 by seizing a United States arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. Brown's raid, accomplished by 20 men in his party, was defeated by a detachment of U.S. Marines.
