Causes of The American Revolution

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    This Proclamation was signed by King George III of England. It prohibited any English settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. Those who had already settled there were required/forced to leave.
  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    This act was passed by Parliament. This act was passed to pay for the war debt. The expenses were to help keep the colonies running.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    This Act was also passed by Parliament. This was the first direct tax towards the colonies. This Act forced colonists to pay taxes that were not towards their own legislature.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    This Act allowed royal troops to stay in houses or empty buildings. The people that owned that house had to take care of them. This included food, clothes, laundry, a bed, etc.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    This occured when a mob of people harassed British soldiers. The British were angry but had orders not to shoot. The British eventually got so agitated that they started firing upon the unarmed crowd. Three were killed right there while two others later died because of their injuries.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    In 1773, a group of men went to the Boston Harbor. They were very upset over the new taxes. The group of men were dressed as Indians. They got on three British ships and dumped forty-five tons of tea into the Boston Harbor.
  • Boston Port Act

    Boston Port Act
    This Act closed the port of Boston in 1774. This lasted until the price of the tea was recovered. They also made Marblehead the official part of entry for the Massachusetts colony.
  • Quebec Act

    Quebec Act
    This Act granted civil government and religious freedom. This freedom was only for Catholics living in Quebec at that time.
  • Massachusetts Regulation Act

    Massachusetts Regulation Act
    This Act made all law officers subject to appointment by the royal governor. They also banned all town meetings that didn’t have approval. The approval had to be by the royal government.
  • Impartial Administration of Justice Act

    Impartial Administration of Justice Act
    This Act allowed the royal governor of a colony to move trails to other colonies. This also applied to if England feared that juries in those colonies wouldn’t judge a case fairly.
