The Sugar Act
The Sugar Act attacked the problem of people trying to evade taxes under the Molasses Act because they were high. Under the Sugar Act they reduced the taxes, but strictly enforced. -
The Stamp Act
The Stamp Act requires a stamp on every newspaper, pamphlet, and other public and legal documents. The stamps were used to make money, and colonist did not think they should have to pay. Eventually they had to give in when they passed the Declaratory Act. (Go to Declaratory Act) -
The Declaratory Act
This act declared that the British were superior to the colonist. This was made to force them to follow the rules the put in place like the Stamp Act. -
Boston Massacre
The Boston Massacre was a fight that occurred on the streets of Boston. This fight was between the patriots and some British soldiers. From this fight 5 dies and 6 were wounded. This was a signal event that led to the Revolutionary War. -
The Tea Act
This act did not impose any new taxes. It was designed to help the East India Company who had 18 million pounds of unsold tea. The British ship it to the colonies to be sold at a discount. The colonist believed this was supporting the British taxes in some way and boycotted, but not purchasing the tea, ships were turned back, and tea filled the harbors. In the docks of the Charleston harbor tea was left to rot. This lead to the Boston Tea Party. -
The Boston Tea Party
Once the ships had arrived in the Boston harbor, the governor refused to let them leave. Instead the sons of liberty unloaded their ships. On this day they tossed 340 chest of tea in to the harbor. This action was directed towards the British due to their disagreement with the unfair taxes. The colonist celebrated revolt, but were quickly put down when the British made them pay for the tea. Then British established the Intolerable Acts. (See Intolerable Acts) -
Boston Port Act (Intolerable Act)
This was in response of the Boston Tea Party.They set up blockades "landing and discharging, loading or shipping, of goods, wares, and merchandise." -

Quartering Act (Intolerable Act)
Required colonist to give soliders a place to stay. This is the second Quatering Act that was revised that to where you could old soliders in other structures other than your house. -

Began with the Battle of Lexington. -
Declartion of Independence
Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman began writing the Declaration of Independence to cut of ties from the British rule. Jefferson wrote the first draft that was then looked at by the other men who made very few changes. Only July 4, 1776 the Declaration of Independence was adopted and that is why we celebrate Independence Day.
