Stamp Act
Parliament passed the Stamp Act in 1765. It imposed a tax on documents and printed items such as wills, newspapers, and plaing cards. Once the tax was paid for, a stamp was placed on the item for proof. -
Townshend Act
In 1767, Parliament passed the Townshed Acts, which taxed goods that were imported into the colony from Britain, such as lead, glass, paint, paper, and tea. -
Boston Massacre
A mob came together in front of he Boston Customs House and taunted the British soldiers standing guard. Shots were fired and five colonists were killed or wounded. -
Boston Tea Party
The Colonists in Boston rebel. The Indians dumped 18,000 pounds of the East India Company's tea into the Boston harbor. -
Tea Act
Lord North devised the Tea Act in order to save the nearly bankrupt British East India Company. Britain gives the East India Company special concessions in the colonial tea business and shuts out colonial tea merchants. -
Intolerable Acts
King George III tightens control over Massachusetts by closing Boston Harbor and quartering troops. Colonial leaderrs form the first Continental Congress and draw up a declaration of colonial rights. -
1st and 2nd Continental Congress
In 1774, 56 delegates met in Philadelphia and drew up a declaration of colonial rights. Then in May of 1775 the congress agreed to recognize the colonial militia as the Continental Army and appointed George Washington as its commander. -
Lexington and Concord
"The british are coming" The Battle of Lexington, the first battle of the Revolutionary War, lasted only 15 minutes. 700 British troops rode out to Concord, but were raided by 3-4000 minutemen. -
Publishing of Common Sense
Challenged the authority of the British goverment and pushed colonist towards the fight for independence.
