Missouri Compromise
Missouri was admitted as a slave state when Maine came forward as wanting to be a slave free state to keep the balance of slave and free states. This compromise prohibited slavery above the 36°30' line of latitude. -
Nat Turner's Rebellion
Slave Nat Turner believed he had a vision from God to bring about a revolt among slaves. He ha dabout 70 enslaved men and free blacks in teh revolt. They killed about 60 people and they themselves were executed. -

When the US became victorious over Mexico, the topic of slavery in the new land was brought around. A bill was brought forward that proposed that slavery was to be prohibited in the new land. This bill failed to pass. -
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 admitted California as a free state, prohibited slave trade in DC, and made sure that Congress would not interfere with inter state slave trade. Also, Present -Day New Mexico and Arizona was made into the New Mexico Territory. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin Published
When Uncle Tom's Cabin is published, it incited anger in the slavery hating northerners. It sells second best to the Bible. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act gave the people in each new territory the choice of being slave or free. This became a battleground over slavery. -
Dred Scott vs. Sanford
Slave Dred Scott sued for his freedom on the basis that he had been taken to many states where slavery was prohibited and therefore he should have been no longer a slave. The US Surpreme Court ruled that because he was a slave, he was not a citizen of the US and therefore had no legal rights. -
John Brown's Raid on Harper's Ferry
John Brown recruited a few people to help him capture the Harper's Ferry Fort/Arsenal and use the weapons to support fleeing african americans freeing slavery. The raid failed after 3 days (Oct. 16-18) and all those except 5 involved were executed or killed during the raid. -
Election of 1860
The election of 1860 was mainly about the issue of slavery. The Democratic pary split itself due to slavery. At the end of the election, after Lincoln was elected, the southern part of the United States seceeded from the Union. -
Firing on Fort Sumter
Lincoln resupplied troops at Fort Sumter and shortly afterward, the south fired on the fort.
