Invention of the Cotton Gin
Was invented by Eli Whitney. The invention of the cotton gin allowed cotton to be produced quicker. It was a machine that allowed slaves to place bundles of cotton in the machine while the cotton gin picked all of the seeds out. The cotton gin made slavery more desired in the south after its envention. -
Missouri Compromise
This act did not allow slavery in the former Louisiana territory. However, it allowed slavery in the state of Missouri. This act was intended to keep both pro and anti slavery parties happy. Instead it caused an uprising in new states after the Missouri Compromise. -
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American slave
The narrative of Frederick Douglass told the story of slavery. It was written by a slave named Frederick Douglass . He was not like other slaves and could read and write. In this book he often told his ideas on slavery and the struggles he had to endure. -
Free-Soil Party of 1848
A political party that was against slavery. The party did not want slavery to expand westward. Worked to help abolish discrimination against African Americans. Also, proposed that the mentality of the free white men who were for slavery should be enslaved. -
Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad
Harriet Tubman was a runaway slave. She had a 40,000 dollar reward on her head. She was considered a Moses for slaves because she used the Underground Railroad to free thousands of slaves. The underground railroad was an escape route from the south to th north, and even into Canada. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The fugitive slave act favored the slaveowner. This act made runaway slaves fearful of their freedom, and made a few slaves flee to Canada. The fugitive act allowed slave hunter to go to the north and collect slaves that have been gone for centuries. The slave hunter can declare the slave as a runaway, and collect a bounty. -
Compromise of 1850
A total of 5 bills were passsed. Allowed California to be a free state. As long as there was a gold rush in California. Denied statehood to New Mexico. The orgeon and New Mexican Territories were ruled as slave states. -
Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe was a northener. She wrote a book that was directed to women of the north. This book describes slave to women who were not educated on slavery. This book featured a character Uncle Tom who was contempt with slavery, and accepeted the oppression of Caucasians. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
It was an act formed to repeal the Missouri act. It was created to hep organize the territories of Nebraska and Kansas. This land opened the oppertunity to voting if kansas should be a slave state or not. It also opened up new farm land and the creation of the transcontinental railroad. -
Bleeding Kansas
A series of violent political confrontations in Kansas. This is were the argument of allowin Kansas to become a slave state. During these argumets this is were John Brown became really radical against slavery. After many discussions John Brown axed many pro slavery arguers. -
Dred Scott v. Sandford
This was the first was case on where African Americans were taken to court. The case allowed Dred Scott to keep his freedom. It also alowed slaves who crossed free states their freedom after the court case. The outcome of this court made African Americans seen as citizens under the Constitution. -
The election of 1860
The election of 1860 was President Lincoln's election. This caused an uprising in the south because they knew that personally that Lincoln was against slavery. The south hated President Lincoln and did not want him to win the election. The day of his inauguration the 11 southern states seceded from the Union. -

The bloodiest war on American soil. This was a war against the south and the north. The south seceded and later beame known as the Confederate states. The war began due to the arguement if slavery shold be abolished.
