The EIC was an English but later a British joint-stock company, which was formed to pursue trade with the East Indies. The Bombay Presidency was created when the city of Bombay was leased to the EIC by a Royal Charter from the King of England, Charles the second. This was the starting point of Britain's rule over India.

The revolt took place in the South Indian city of Vellore and was brief, only lasting one full day. The Indian Rebellion of 1857 was a rebellion in India against the rule of EIC, that ran from may 1857 to july 1859. In 1858 the power of the EIC in India was ended, but Britain still rules India.

Gandhi led India to independence and inspired movements for civil rights and freedom across the world. He later becomes a member and leader of the Indian National Congress.
