Booth's Plan to Kill President Lincoln

  • April 9th

    Confederate General Robert E. Lee has surrendered.
  • April 11th

    Booth threatens to kill Lincoln when discussing African American rights. He says, "Now, by god I'll put him through"(Swanson 8).
  • April 13th

    Booth could not sleep through the Grand Illumination. This aggravated him.
  • April 14th

    The Confederacy was dead. This brought rage to Booth.
  • April 14th

    The President is coming to Ford's Theater. Booth starts to come up with a plan.
  • April 14th

    Booth explains to Marry Surrett that he needs her to deliver a package of his things to her tavern. He then tells her that he will be riding out of Washington that night. When he gets to her tavern, he will be picking up the package, guns, and ammunition.
  • April 14th

    Booth gets his 44. caliber pistol.
  • April 14th

    Booth tells Atzerodt at 10:00pm his plan to assassinate the president.
  • April 14th

    Lincoln enters Ford's Theater at 8:30pm. Booth's plan is beginning to go into action.
  • 10:00pm

    Booth enters the Star Saloon while waiting to assassinate Lincoln.
  • April 14th

    A little after 10, Booth has his pistol in one hand and his knife in the other. He is waiting for there to be minimal actors on the stage.
  • 10:13pm

    Harry Hawk enters the stage. He says the comical line and the crowd bursts into laughter. Booth then shoots Lincoln in the back of the head. He then jumps on the stage and shouts, "Sic semper tyrannis!"(Swanson 43).
  • April 14th

    Luis Powell tries to kill Secretary of State.
  • April 14th

    Booth sends Vice President Johnson a Message. It says, "Don't wish to disturb you. Are you home? John Wilkes Booth"(Swanson 15).
