    Magna Carta

    Magna Carta
    The Magna Carta was an agreement signed in 1215 that limited King John's powers because he was abusing them. It forced him to obey the laws.
  • Jan 1, 1300

    Bicameral parliament created in England

    Henry III met regularly with a group of citizens for advice and help governing. Over time, this group became known as parliament and began making laws for the country.
  • Glorious Revolution

    In 1688 Parliament removed King James from power and gave the throne to William and Mary.
  • English Bill of Rights

    English Bill of Rights
    Parliament wanted to be sure that no King or Queen could ever try to take back their power and become too powerful. They created the English Bill of Rights. This said only Parliament could make laws, raise taxes, and control the army.

    Articles of Confederation is approved
    The articles of confederation was the first attempt of our first government. It failed because it was not storng enough and left our counrty in trouble. Another problem with it was that the states were not getting along becasue the government couldn't settle disputes between states. There was no executive leader, and no national court system.
  • Shays Rebellion

    Daniel Shay started a rebellion with other farmers in Massachusetts to show that there was agressive debt and tax collection that ended up shuting down poeple's farms.

    A meeting that was called in Philadelphia to fix the Articles of Confederaiation. There was 55 delagates from the 12 states.
  • The Great Compromise

    An agreement made at the constitutional convention that made the senate have equal representation like the New Jersey plan suggested. It also made the house of represenatives have representation based on population like the virginia plan suggested.
  • America divided: Federalists and Anti-federalists

    America divided becuase some people were for the new Constitution and some were against it. Fedralists-Supported the Constitution they hought we needed a strong central government.They believed 3 equal branches were necessary, and Bill of Rights was not necessary because the new gov. didn’t have the power to abuse the people’s rights. Anti Fedralists-Did not support the Constitution,thought it Took too much power from the states,Federal gov. too strong,thought it needed a bill of rights.

    The Constitution was the second attempt at our government. It was created so it had a strong central government, 3 branches of government that were all equal, and had no bill of rights because it did no need one because the government didn't have the powere to abuse people's rights.
