Battle of Fort Sumter
This battle started the war. It happened in Charlestown, North Carolina and was held by the Union Soldiers at the time, then fell to the Confederates the next day. Was named after Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter. What caused this battle was at first, the North claimed Fort Sumter, but the South said it was theirs. Four months later, the war began. The end results, the Confederates (South) won. -
Battle of Philippi
This battle is known as the "First Land Battle of the Civil War". It lasted less than 20 minutes and resulted in no fatilities. The main reason this battle began, was so the railroad line of Baltimore and Ohio could continue to be open. This railroad was of great significance to the Union. The end results, the Union (North) won. -
First Battle of Bull Run
This was the first major battle of the Civil War. Also known as the Battle of Manassas. It began at Fort Sumter. There had been small clashes between the 2 sides and it went from there. Abraham Lincoln was the first to strike. End result, the Confederates (South) won. -
Battle of Chickamauga
This battle was the largest Confederate victory in the Western theater. They used state-of-the-art repeating rifles and it played a decisive role. It began by the claiming of Chattanooga for its major rail network. There were skirmishes beginning on September 17th and so on, but the fighting for Chattanooga started on Septemeber 19th. The final result, Confederates won. -
Battle of the Wilderness
This battle was the first in Ulysses S. Grant's Overland Campain which is a series of battles waged in Virginia.The union was better equipped to replace both troops/supplies than the Confederates were. What caused this battle was Ulysses S. Grant began planning a major offense on the Confederate capital of Richmond (Confederate Campain). The end result, it was unclear who won. -
Battle of Palmito Ranch
This is where the last land action of the Civil War took place and it was the final battle. What caused this war was the agreement from a man that agreed to preclude fighting between the Union and Confederate forces on the Rio Grande. The end result, the Confederates won.
