Battle of San Jacinto
At the battle of San Jacinto, General Santa Ana's army was defeated and he was forced to sign a treaty that gave Texas their independence. This was important because it started more conflict over the border disputes. According to the treaty, the Southern border of Texas was at the Rio Grande but the Mexican government denied the treaty in its entirety. -
Texas joins the US
The US decided to annex Texas after seeing that it was beginning to start forming treaties with the British. This event is important because now the US government was right next to Mexico and they began to negotiate their border. -
US Declares War
After general Arista sent 1600 soldiers across the Rio Grande, he opened fire on 16 men. Since the US believed that their border was at the Rio Grande, Polk was able to argue that "Mexico has... shed blood on American soil". This was an important event because it officially started the war between Mexico and the US. -
The Bear Flag Revolt
Mariano Vallejo's ranch in Sonoma was invaded by a group of Anglos who imprisoned him and then declared California independent. This lead to the annexation of California just 3 weeks later and as a result many of the Mexicans who lived there were discriminated by the Anglos. This is a critical point in the war because it showed that Mexico would lose more than just Texas and New Mexico to the US. -
Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican American war. It is important because it stated that New Mexico, California, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah were now US states. It also declared that the Mexicans who remained in US territory would be given the same rights as any other citizen.
