Battle of Galipolli

  • Phase 1

    Winston Churchill telegraphed tye commander of Brithish Naval forces, Vice Admiral S.H Carden, asking him if the Dardanelles could be forced by Naval action alone. Carden responded saying that the straights could not be rushed and might be forced
  • Phase 2

    Phase 2
    The British and French opened the Campaign with long range naval bombardment. The beleived that victory could be achieved without use of troops having to step on enemy ground. After a delay due to bad weather, the Allied forced knocked out forts at the mouth of Dardanelles
  • Phase 3

    Phase 3
    The Anglo French naval fleet was sent against Dardanelles, there were undetected mines and half of the fleet sunk.

    The Ground attack on Peninsula began. Australian troops came ashore as part of the Allied landing force. The Allies launched a large scale land invasion at the Galipoli Peninsula, a week after there had been Anglo French naval attacks on the Dardanelles. Turkish forces were prepared to meet them.

    The first attemp to capture village of Krithiantakes place. They first started with naval bombardment but the first attemp fails

    The Gascon was an hospital that evacuated the wounded from Anzac, it carried 548 casualties, 14 of which died on the voyage

    The Turkish began shelling Anzac coge from a new position behind their lines.

    Phase 8
    The second attemp yo capture the Village lf Krithia takes place. The allies had 105 pieces of heavy artillery, they thought they were still outnumbered by the Turkish. The allies were able to advance 600 yards but declared it a failed attemp after three days
  • Phase 9

    Phase 9
    In an attemp to break the stalemate, the British waited too long to move against the heights and Ottoman reinforcements arrived, stopping their progress. The British the dug trenches and only advanced a few miles
  • Phase 10

    Phase 10
    Sir Hamilton a british commander was replaced by Sir Charles Monro. He soon advised that Galipoli should be evacuated. They needed to take off 93.000 troops, 200guns, and over 5,000 animals
  • Phase 11

    Phase 11
    The Allied forces began the retreat from the Galipoli Peninsula. Evacuation was carried out during night time.
  • Phase 12

    Phase 12
    A final full retreat by the allied forces from the shires of the Peninsula, ending a campaign that resukted in iver 250,0p0 Allied casulaties alone. As a result of the disaster, Winston Churchill resigned as the First Lord of the Admiralty
