The Begging of Basketball
The first 13 rules of basketball are created. This is a baseline for the many more more rules that will be added to this sport through out history. -
First Professional Basketball Game(Trenton vs.Brooklyn)
This is the first proffesinal game that was ever played. Each player was $15 for playing and Trenton beat Brooklyn 15-1. This game was a huge success and would be know has the building grounds for many more games to follow. -
The Rules Change
The players are now allowed to shoot the ball after they have picked up their dribble. This wasn't allowed in the first 13 rules of basketball. This is significant because if this rule hadn't been changed then basketball could look a lot different today. -
FIBA Forms
The very first international organization of basketball is formed. If FIBA hadn't been formed then basketball could still be just strictly a USA sport. -
Basketball Becomes Part of the Olympics
Basketball became an official sport and was included in the olympics. The US easily beat every other team and continued to beat every other team until 1972. This event lead to many wins for the US when it came to the olympics and will hopefully lead to many more in future olympic games. -
Basketball Goes Global
The first basketball game, Fordham vs. University of Pittsburg at Maddison Square Garden, is televised for thousands of people to watch from the comfort of their own homes. This changed the fact that people didn't have to leave their houses and pay to watch a basketball game. -
3 Point Line is Invented
Herman Sayger, a high school basketball coach, believed that long range shots should be rewarded with 3 points. The three point line has changed basketball by allowing for three point shots that could end a game with one bucket. -
BAA Forms
A group of executives in New York formed another professional basketball league called the Basketball Association of America. The BAA was a competitor of the NBL. The BAA was one of the first professional basketball leagues that would compete against other leagues. To this day we have different leagues competing against each other. -
Basketball Size Changes
The basketball size changes to 30 inches. This is significant because this is the ball that we still play with to this day. This allows for the production of the smaller sized ball which is 28.5. -
The WNBA is Created
The NBA agree to start a women Nation Basketball Association. This changed the way basketball was played. Women were now allowed to play a sport that had been played only by men for 105 years.
