Apartheid
After the Dutch and Europeans migrated to South Africa, they started a political party which created laws that would allow the white people to be considered superior. After the acts were instituted, countries began to notice that South Africa wasn't treating the natives equally, so other countries said they wouldn't trade with them unless things were improved. They made some changes, but overall it was still bad. Finally, in 1991, President F.W. De Klerk ended the policy of Apartheid. . -
Hendrik Verwoerd
Hendrik Frensch Verwoerd, a white South African, was considered the "Father of Apartheid" and the "Father of Bantu Education". Verwoerd favored complete separation of people according to their racial make-up. . He studied psychology and sociology at different universities such as Hamburg, Leipzig, and Berlin in Germany. He was assassinated by a man named Demetrio Tsafendas who stabbed him to death because of his racist views.. -
The Defiance Campaign of 1952
The Defiance Campaign was the first large scale, multi-racial political campaign against Apartheid led by the African National Congress, an ant-apartheid paerty. More than 8,000 trained volunteers went to jail for defying these "unjust laws" that had worsened since the white National Party came to power in 1948. -
Bantu Education Act
The Bantu Education Act was the creation of a separate and unequal system of black education. It caused the non-whites to have very little freedom at all. This system prepared African non-white students to be manual laborers to serve a white society and economy, it didn't matter what the person's abilities were, they could not study for higher professions. -
Freedom Charter
The Freedom Charter was written by the ANC party in 1955. The charter outlined the concerns of the ANC,Concerns such as personal rights, human riights, and human rights in general. The Charter led to a court case which lasted 4 and a half years. Then the ANC went on to build today's free South Africa by using the Freedom Charter as its guidlines. -
Rivonia Trial
In 1963 the Rivonia Trial was held to try members of the ANC for their treasonous acts against Apartheid. They were tried for sabotage and conspiracy. Mandela was already serving 5 years in prison at the time of the trial. The verdict found all but two guilty, and they were sentenced to life in prison. -
Nelson Mandela Imprisonment
Nelson Mandela had many great achievments, but he was also imprisoned by the white government for his opposition to Apartheid. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for twenty seven years. He was charged of treason and sabotage by the white government, the National Party. Eventually, he was freed and became the first democratically elected president in South Africa. -
Soweto Uprising
The Nations Department of Education made the non-white schools in South Africa change their language to Afrikan which is the official white language. The children and teachers did not like this because not everyone could speak the language, so they were not able to teach as well.As a result, the Afican school children went on strike. The policeman came out and started shooting snd killed many defenseless students. -
President F.W De Klerk
President F.W De klerk was a man who changed the lives of many African people. He helped abolish the laws of Apartheid.He was president from 1889 to 1994.In 1990 De Klerk released Nelson Mandela from prison after being held there for 27 years.Then he and Nelson Mandela reccieved the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for promoting human rights in South Africa. -

May 10, 1994 is the date that nelson mandela was brought into office.Nelson Mandela was the first black president. He focused on fighting poverty and social inequality. He didn't pay mutch atention to dezease. he promoted political debate and social reform. -

Afrikaner National Party won its Political Control, so South Africa stayed a country divided in two things: Politically and Socially, the (ANP) was a governing party of the country from 4th of June until 9th of May. -
African National Congress
The African National Congress who fought against the policy of Apartheid was in peaceful They supported demonstration against unfair racial practice. Just like Ganhdi. A famous member of the ANC (African National Congress for short) was Nelson Mandela. Mandels jioned in 1944. He helped racial rights along with the other members of ANC. -
Nelson Mandela's Achievements
Nelson Mandela was a great leader. He helped gain rights for many people in his beloved homeland, South Africa, as well as around the world. He won the Nobel Peace Prize with President deKlerk for the abolition of Apartheid in South Africa. After being imprisoned for 27 years for his fight against Apartheid, he went on to live a life dedicated to the struggle for human rights worldwide. He died in December, 2013 of old age and will always be remembered as a hero for the fight for equality.. -
Archibishop Desmond Tutu
Desmond Tutu play a large part in ending Apartheid. He was ordained in the Anglican Church and became an Archbishop. Desmond believed that Aparthied could be solved non-violently. He was the second black person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He won for working to stop Apartheid peacefully. In 1996 he was asked to lead the Truth & Reconcilitation Commission by Nelson Mandela. Tutu led that from 1996 to 1998. He's now the Archibishop of Cape Town and represents humane equality for everyone. -

Jacob Zuma was elected president
On April, 7, 2007 Jacob Zuma became the president of South Africa. He became the first person of Zulu descent to become president of South Africa. He became president even though he had no formal education. He is working hard to repair financially and socially the damage done by Apartheid. He is the first post-Apartheid president in South Africa. When Mandela died at the end of 2013, he said we had lost a truly great hero. He is still president today. -
The Death of Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela died at the age of 95 in his home in South Africa on December 5, 2013. He will always be remembered as a freedom fighter and a symbol of the struggle against human oppression. With his death, South Africa is left to fight for and embody his promise and idealism.
