    Three-way alliance
    The Aztecs formed a three-way alliance with the Texcocans and Tacubans. Under the leadership of Itzcoatl they defeated their most powerful rivals, the Tepanec.

    Moctezuma I and Tlacaelel

    Moctezuma I and Tlacaelel were half brothers who were primary architects of the Aztec empire. Tlacaelel reformed Aztec state and Aztec religion until 1469, while Moctezuma I worked on expansion.

    In 1511-1512 the Aztecs broke out in an epidemic of the monkeypox. It took a hard toll on the city of Tenochtitlan, and helped lead to their downfall.

    Yellow Fever

    In 1576-1581, another epidemic occured, this one being of Yellow Fever. Along with mono, yellow fever killed off 75% of the population of Mesoamerica.
