This was the nickname for the Alaska Purchase. The state was purchased from Russia in 1867 for 7 million dollars. The people referred to the purchase as Seward's Icebox or Seward's Folly because no one saw the point in buying that state. It was cold and isolated. It was for a long time, viewed as a pointless purchase. -

The book being published by the navy officer was very important because he argued that a strong navy was needed if we to secure the country as a world power. -
Hawaii- Queen Liliuokalani Overthrown
American settlers tried to overthrow the queen to invade Hawaii and take it for themselves. However, President Grover Cleveland tried to stop the annexation of Hawaii. -
Spanish-American War- Joseph Pulitzer's "World" and William Hearst's "Journal" published
These two New York newspapers were very exaggerated stories of what was going on in Cuba, however, it got the attention of many Americans and Congress and the president was urged to help Cuba. -
Spanish American War- Cuban Revolt
Cuba was being ruled by terrible people and the people tried to revolt in 1895 and force Spain's withdrawal. Spain back-lashed by sending 100,000 troops to fight back. The Cuban people were forced into camps after the revolt and were starved to death and diseased. The revolt was a cause for the Spanish-American War. -
Hawaii- Annexation of Hawaii
The war in the Philippines gave America's congress and president an excuse to invade Hawaii. -

The sinking was important because it pushed America to really consider war. -

In response to the sinking of the Maine battleship, the people pushed for war. Instead, President McKinley gave Spain an ultimatum to stop hurting Cuba- which they agreed to, but, Americans kept pushing war. -

The Spanish minister wrote to President McKinley to spite him and the letter was published by the Yellow Press and outraged Americans. -

On April 20, 1898, the amendment was passed and authorized war. -

The fleet was ordered by Roosevelt and the fleet fired on Spanish ships. -

Spain realized after they had no navy, that they couldn't continue to fight so they asked for peace and the war ended in early August of 1989. -

This was to promote the annexation of the Philippines, and it was approved and passed. -

China- Boxer Rebellion
Nationalism and fear of foreigners was a big thing fr China at the time. Because of this fear, a group of Chinese boxers went and murdered Christian missionaries. -
China- Hay's Second set of notes
Hay feared that China's fear would destroy their independence, so, Hay wrote a second set of notes to the powers of China to ensure American commitment. -

McKinley was shot by an anarchist and with that, Roosevelt took office and led the Big Stick Diplomacy. -

Roosevelt wanted to build a canal in Panama, but, Panama was strongly controlled by Columbia and wouldn't allow a canal. So, Roosevelt led a revolt in Panama to try and gain their independence so he could gain a canal. -

After Roosevelt helped Panama revolt from the Colombians, Panama soon gained its independence. -
Panama Canal- Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty signed
Panama's new minister immediately negotiated the treaty which gave America a 10 mile strip of land for the canal. -
Japan- Gentlemen's Agreement
Japan and the US were on weird soil and that concerned the laws of California because Japanese Americans were discriminated against, so, Roosevelt created the compromise and forced California to appeal their laws. -
Dollar Diplomacy- Intervention in Nicaragua
America intervened in Nicaragua's affairs to protect the country's investments. -
Mexico- General Victoriano Huerta seized power
Huerta had the democratically elected president of Mexico killed so he could seize power and form a dictatorship. Which outraged President Wilson and caused Wilson to ignore Huerta's rule all in all because Wilson was a strong supporter of Democracy and Huerta wasn't. -
Mexico- Tampico Incident
Wilson called a fleet to fight with Mexican revolutionaries against Huerta. The fleet was arrested by Huerta immediately, but were released soon. But because Huerta failed to apologize, Wilson retaliated by sending Navy troops to Veracruz permanently until Huerta was out. This was the first incident in the Americas to be settled through joint mediation. -
