Antebellum is derived from the suffix ante (before), and the stem bellum (war). It is the period of time and the events leading up to The American Civil War. -
Texas declares independence from Mexico
Texas declared independence from Mexico in 1836. This event lead to the Mexican American War, and ultimately played a role in the beginning of TheAmerican Civil War. -
Texas added to the Union
Texas was added to the United States in 1845 as the 28th state, after seceding from Mexico in 1836. This was a major factor in the Mexican American War. -
Mexican American War begins
The Mexican American War begins sparked by the tension between the nations. This event was was also caused by the annexation of Texas by the USA. -
First gold found in California by James Marshall.
First found at Sutter Creek in California, the discovery of gold in California led to its quick growth. Settlers rushed to California, in the ‘49 gold rush, from the East in hopes of finding fortune in a new, unsettled land. Many of these hopeful adventurers ended up settling in San Francisco or working as miners or loggers. -
Mexican American War concludes
The Mexican American War ends after 3 years of conflict (1846, 1847, and 1848) with The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The treaty favored the USA, and recognized them as the winners of the war. -
The Compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 stated that it should be up to the individual states if they were going to be free or slave states. This was agreed upon and replaced the Missouri Compromise in ruling of Slave or Free States. -
California added to the Union
California was added to the Union as the 31st state of America. After The Compromise of 1850, California decided to become a free state through a popular sovereignty vote. -
Lincoln is inducted as President of the United States
Lincoln is accepted as the 16th president of the United States of America. He ran and served in office as a Republican during the Antebellum and Civil War periods. -
South Carolina Secedes from the Union
South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. This move was crucial in the formation of the Confederacy and encouraging other states to secede as well. -
The Civil War begins
The American Civil War begins between the Union and Confederacy, formally the Northern and Southern halves of the United States. This divide was caused by the debate over slavery, as well as economic and political disagreements.
