Black Land Act No 27
This law prohibited blacks from owning land outside of the designated areas. This allowed for easier subjugation and segregation of blacks by whites. -
Black Administration Act No 38
There were two different sections to this Act.
The first section allowed the minister of an area of land to force any tribe, family, or person to move from one place to another within South Africa.
The second section prohibited the formation of feelings of hostility between blacks and whites. -
Representation of Blacks Act No 12
This act removed black voters from the Cape and placed them on a separate roll where they were represented by four white senators. Obviously, four white senators probably won't best represent the majority of the black population in South Africa. -
Natives Consolidation Act No 25
Black males who were deemed to be leading idle lives could be removed from an urban an area. Black males were removed no matter what had happened to them. Whether they were sick, fired, it didn't matter. If the white man felt that the black man wasn't living a good life, he was removed. -
Black Building Workers Act No 27
This prohibited blacks from performing skilled work in the building industry in white urban areas. Finding work for blacks was hard enough, this act just made it even harder. -
Black Laws Amendment Act No 54
The 1945 Urban Areas Consolidation Act was amended so that all black people above the age of sixteen were required to carry passes and that no person could stay in an urban area for more than 72 hours UNLESS they had lived there for 15 years or had been employed for 10 years. As I read in Kaffir Boy, passes were a huge part of the livelihoods of blacks. They needed them to travel, find work, and not get arrested. This made act made life 10x harder for the lives of blacks in South Africa. -
Criminal Law Amendment Act No 8
This act made civil disobedience punishable by a three-year jail sentence. MLK said that civil disobedience is the highest form of respect for the law. By making civil disobedience a three year jail sentence, this act is completely ridiculous. -
Reservation of Separate Amenities Act No 49
This allowed for segregation of public amenities such as restrooms and transportation methods. By segregating public amenities, whites hoped blacks would feel more and more inferior. -
Blacks (Prohibition of Interdicts) Act No 64
This act prohibited Africans from getting an injunction. This basically means that the blacks in South Africa couldn't appeal an order of banishment, even if they knew it was invalid. This act completely takes away the "innocent until proven guilty" mindset. -
Black Affairs Administration Act No 45
This allowed for black self-government in townships. This is a step in the right direction in allowing blacks to represent themselves how they would like.
