Dread Scott V. Sandford
This court case decided that slaves were not citizens of the so they could not sue in federal court. This was a huge step backwards for slaves in the United States. -
13th Amendment
The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. This changed many peoples lives in the United States. -
14th Amendment
This amendment granted citizenship for all people born in the United States. This means that everybody is protected by the Bill of Rights in the Country. -
15th Amendment
The 15th amendment granted all African American men the right to vote. This was a huge step forward for the Civil Rights Movement. -
White Primaries
These were votes that white people were only allowed to vote in. This was extremely racist and illegal. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
Plessy v. Ferguson created the statement separate but equal. This statement was eventually overturned in Brown v. Board. -
Nineteenth Amendment
This amendment made it illegal to deny voting based on sex. This was huge for women's rights in the United States. -
Brown v. Board of Education
Brown v. Board of Education stopped discrimination in schools. It forced many separate schools to integrate. -
24th Amendment
This amendment got rid of the poll tax. This means that everyone can now vote based on the amount of money they have. -
Poll Taxes
Poll taxes were a fee that you had to pay to vote. This was made illegal because that meant that many voters with less money couldn't vote. -
Civil Rights Act of 1964
This act prohibited discrimination in public places. This abolished many separated places. -
Voting Rights Act of 1965
This act destroyed many discriminatory voting practices in the South. This truly gave everybody the right to vote. -
Affirmative Action Date
This prohibited employment discrimination based on race, color, and national origin. -
Reed v. Reed
This case struck down a law that was discriminatory against women. -
Equal Rights Amendment
The amendment was made to stop discrimination on the basis of sex. It was barely passed by the states in 1972. -
Regents of the University of California v. Bakke
The Supreme Court declared affirmative action to be legal but invalidated on the basis of race. -
Bowers v. Hardwick
The Supreme Court upheld a Georgia law banning Sodomy. This case also overturned Lawrence v. Texas. -
Americans with Disabilities Act
This act prohibits discrimination based on whether the person is disabled or not. This forced many public buildings to change their designs in order to accommodate all people. -
Motor Voter Act
The Motor Voter Act requires that states have voter registration capabilities at the State motor vehicles office. -

This case requires that all same-sex marriages are recognized by the states and the federal govt.
