  • Purchase of Alaska

    Congress bought Alaskan territory from Russia. This added more land to the country in a new place not yet explored in depth by Americans.
  • Blaine and the Pan-American Conference

    This conference was held to increase the ties between the United States and the countries south. This conference establish hemispheric cooperation which in turn led to an expansion of US power.
  • Spanish American War

    Due to conflict over land and an intense nationalist pride in Americans war with Spain broke out. At the end of this war a lot of land was great to to America and it increased our international power greatly.
  • Annexation of Hawaii

    After this land was given to America as a result of the war, the white farmers living there decided to take the land. They wanted to overthrow the queen and the declaration of war on the Philippines gave America the reason to annex.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    In the heat of a Chinese rebellion China asked for other nations to help intervene to put it down. After the US and other nations helped end the uprising China needed to pay a sum to repay the other countries. This hut their economy and their empire as a whole making it easier for the US to expand into Asia.
  • Panama Canal

    With the growing American empire the US needed a more direct route for sea transportation. They build the canal to connect the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in Central America. This allowed for easy transportation of people, goods, and weapons.
  • Wilson’s Moral Diplomacy

    During his presidency Wilson tried to correct the faults of past imperialism. He worked to regain relations with countries throughout the world.
