Nez Perce War: The war took place.
The Nez Perce refused the government demands that they move to a reservation. A small group of Nez Perce Indians fought with the U.S. Army near the Big Hole River in Montana. The conflict between the U.S. government and the Nez Perce was one of the most tragic of the many Indian wars of the 19th century. Both sides suffered many deaths. -
The McKinley tariff (Tariff Act of 1890) was passed.
In 1890, William McKinley, a member of the United States House of Representatives from Ohio, presented a tariff bill, which became known as the McKinley Tariff. Tariffs are taxes put on foreign goods by federal governments. By placing taxes on foreign goods, these products became more expensive. By increasing prices on foreign products, they hoped that people would buy more goods that were manufactured in their own country. -
The Spanish American War 1898-1901
The Spanish-American War of 1898 ended Spain’s colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere and protected the position of the United States as a Pacific power. U.S. victory in the war created a peace treaty that forced the Spanish to give up rights on Cuba, and to surrender power over Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines to the United States. -
President William McKinley Assassinated
President William McKinley was assassinated by Leon Frank Czolgosz, who was a Polish-American former steel worker. McKinley suffered for eight days before his death from being shot twice in the abdomen by Czolgosz. McKinley led the nation to victory in the Spanish–American War, raised protective tariffs to help American industry, and kept the nation on the gold standard in a removal of inflationary proposals. -
The Ford Motor Company Founded
The Ford Motor Company, an American automotive corporation was founded by Henry Ford and 11 associate investors. The first car they sold was a two-cylinder Model A, assembled at the Mack Avenue Plant in Detroit, Michigan, on July 23, 1903. Ford celebrated their 50 year milestone in Dearborn, Michigan on August 20, 2009. -
The Sinking of the RMS Titanic
On April 15, 1912 at 2:20 a.m. the British ocean liner Titanic sank into the North Atlantic Ocean about 400 miles south of Newfoundland, Canada after hitting an iceberg. The RMS Titanic was one of the largest and most luxurious ocean liners ever built. It was designed by William Pirrie and was thought to be the world’s fastest ship. It was considered to be unsinkable. -
World War I Began
World War I, also known as the First World War or the Great War, was a worldwide war centred in Europe that began on July 28, 1914 and lasted until November 11, 1918. More than 9 million combatants and 7 million civilians died during this war. It was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, creating major political changes, including revolutions in many of the nations that were involved.
