Sweard's Folly is the purchase of Alaska.Secretary of State, William H. Seward purchaased Alaska for $7.2 million from Russia. Alaska was useful for petroleum for America. -

Grant was a Civil War veteran and leader. He was put in charge of the military portion of reconstruction and that led to his presidency. -

Jim Crow Laws
Jim Crow Laws were put into place in order to keep white supremacy in the South. Poll taxes that could randomly go up at anytime and literacy tests were made to keep blacks from voting. Grandfather clauses allowed poor, illerteraite whites to vote anyways. The Jim Crow Laws made a segregated society in the South. -
Rutheford B Hayes
19th President of the USA. He was elected towards the end of the reconstruction period and focused alot on making the North and South stronger uninted. -
Comprimise of 1877
The results to make the South happy post reconstruction. There would be federal funds for internal improvement. Southerners would be able to hold cabinent positions. Also a withdrawl of federal troops. -
James A Garfield
The 20th President of America. He was assassinated and that led to the Pendleton Service Reform Act which helped distribute gov. jobs. -

The 21st president of USA. He was Garfield's VIce President. He fought taxes and tarrifs. He also didn't support the CHinese Exclusion Act. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
Asian immigraints were being targeted. This Act prohibited Chinese labor immigration for ten years. The Act was extended twice. -

22nd and 24th President of the USA. He was the first democrat elected after the Civil War. He really liked vetoing things but not not like giving money. -

Prevented railroads from being a monoply. Required rates to br reasonable and just". Helped create price controls. -

23rd President. He suppoorted immigration and opened Ellis Island. -

Black men were attacked after voting, outside the goverment bulidings by white men with rifels. 14 black men were killed, this led to the rise of NC's Jim Crow laws. -
Galveston Hurricane
Took place in Galveston, Texas. The deadlist hurricane in US history. Killed between 6,000 and 12,000 many survivors moved to the midwest. -

Created state and federal parks. Put pressure on desolving monoplies. Wanted to make America a super power. -

Theodore Roosevelt extended the Monroe Doctorine. He said the U.S should be the "police man" of the western hemisphere, meaning we intervene in all problems with South and North America -
San Francisco Earthquake
A 7.8 magnitude eartquake. Killed 3,000 people and destroyed at least 80% of the city. Caaused many fires. -
President William Howard Taft
Roosevelt pushed for taft to get presidency when he first ran. He was alos a "trust buster". He also promoted fair prices for the railroad to charge. -

Killed 146 ladies. Began movements to increase safety regulations for all factories. -
Election of 1912
Roosevelt - Bull Moose Party, Taft- Republican, Wilson- Democrat. Taft just ran to spite Teddy who now hated him, they split the Republican vote in half. Wilson won with all the democratic votes. -
Woodrow Wilson
He got the office due to Taft and Roosevelt fude had the republic party split getting him all the democrat votes. He created the federal reserve act, he passsed prohibition, he established mothers day as a holiday, he also gave women the right to vote. -

Created 12 districts, each with their own federal reserve. Fiat Money, word backs money. Reserve m=board to regulate the system. -

Gave women the right to vote. This was the next natural step since women had worked so many jobs in WWI. -

29th President. Had the teapot dome scandal while in office and died from a heart attack. -

After the stock market crash many Americans were left homeless, jobless, and starving. Unemployment sky rockected and children stopped going to school in order to make money for their family. -

He is blamed for the Great Depression. He tried to get us out of the depression by buliding the Hoover Dam but he failed. -

The bottom fell out of the market. Investors tried to sell off everything before prices fell to far. 16 million shares were sold and millions more could not find buyers. -

President that got us out of the Great Depression. He did a lot of federal aid to help the public such as social security. -

President Truman was faced with the task of deciding to drop the atomic bomb and also having to rebuild war torn countries after WWII. -

An American U2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union threatened the US "we will bury you". -
John F Kennedy
Handeled the Cuban Missile Crisis and promoted peace talks with the cold war. He was assassinated in a prade by Lee Harvey Oswald. -
Bay of Pigs
Fidel Castro takes over Cuba making it communist. The US CIA trains Cuban refugees to rebels and sends them to assassinate Fidel Castro. America gets caught. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
Soviet Union placed missiles in Cuba that were capable of reaching the US. Kennedy blocaked Cuba until the Soviet Union dismanteled the sights and this led to the signing of the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. -
Lyndon B Johnson
36th President. He outlawed segregation and pushed for education reforms. -
Richard Nixon
President Nixon had the watergate scandal and would have gotten impeached but he quit before that happened. -

4 students killed. 9 wounded. Ohio national gaurd opened fire on a peacful anti war protest. -

38th President. He didn't ever get voted for the vice president resinged and the the president leaving Ford to be a good calming president. -

He is still alive but has cancer. Negotiated peace talks for the middle east. In the end many people didn't like him and felt like he was a weak leader. -
Camp David Accords
Jimmy Carter basically made Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Menachim Begin of Isreal sit down at the presidential retreat and talk peace. This again was America showing unconditional support for Isreal. This also helped ease tentions in the middle east. -
Ronald Reagan
Trickle Down Economics. He is looked at as an very affective leader. He wanted to boost the economy and reduce people depending on the goverment. -
George H. W. Bush
Dealt with the Kuwait oil Crisis with Iraq and decided not to make it a long war. Fairly calm and liked leader, -

He was a good president all thoug many people don't like how he handled 9/11 and the war on terror. -
