The Mayflower Compact
100 pilgrims sailed sailed for Virginia on a ship called the Mayflower. They landed in what is today Massachusetts after storms blew them off course. They called their home Plymouth. -
Anne Bradstreet
Anne Bradstreet was the first colonial poet to be published. Her book was published in 1650. -
Bacon's Rebellion
Nathanial Bacon organized a force of 1,000 westners and began attacking and killing Native Americans, because Virginia's tobacco planters bought most of the land. So there was no land left for the poorer colonists. -
English Bill of Rights
King William and Quenn Mary signed the English Bill of Rights. The Bill of Rights was a written list of freedoms that government promises to protect. -
Triangular Trade
At about 1700, slave traders developed a regular routine. It was called the triangular trade. The triangular trade was a three-way trade between colonies, the islands of Caribbean, and Africa. -
The Great Awkening
The Great Awakening was an emotional-packed Christian movement. Jonathan Edwards called on people to examine their lives and commit themselves to God. -
Freedom of the Press
This court case helped establish another important right called freedom of the press. John Peter Zenger was arrested for printing a series of articles that critized the governor. He was a publisher of New York Weekly Journal. -
The French and Indian War
French was building forts to back their claim between Lake Erie and the Ohio River Valley. George Washington was sent to order the French to leave. -
Phillis Wheatley
Phillis Wheatley was enslaved African in Boston. Her first poem was published when she was 14 in the 1760's. Her work was popular in Europe. -
The Boston Tea Party
A large crowd disguised as Native Americans threw 342 cases of tea in the harbor. They destroyed 90,000 pounds of tea worth thousands of dollars. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
Americans surrounded Bunker Hill. Most of them were farmers, and workers. None of them were actual trained soldiers. The Battle of Bunker Hill did not solve Britain's problem. -
Common Sense
Thomas Paine created Common Sense. Common sense was a 50 page pamphlet that stimulated broad support for independance. It was published in Philadelphia. -
Declaration of Independance
This is the day the Declaration of Independance was signed. It was written by Thomas Jefferson. -
Valley Forge
Washington's Continental army went through a cruel winter in 1777-1778. They were at a camp at Valley Forge in Pennsylvania. -
Treaty of Paris
On April 15th, 1783, the Treaty of Paris was signed. This meant that the war was officially over. Britain and United States both agreed to do certain things.
