The goverment insisted on taxes counting for the slaves as well, meaning the Southern states would be paying more taxes. The South decided they wanted to develp their own culture with their own rules. 11 Southern states seperated themselves from the North in 1860. This divided the states in preparation for a war that would begin the next year. -
Battle Of Fort Sumter
Fort SumterConfederate general, Beaurgeard, ordered Anderson to surrender Fort Sumter but Anderon refused. In response to his refusal, the confederates open fired the next morning. With the lack of amunition Anderson had, he wait to fire back for hours. In the end, with the lack of amo in effect, Anderson surrendered the Fort but went back to the North a hero. This battle is important cause it was the first "shot" of the civil war. This was the beginning. -

Going into this battle, the North had an overly complicated plan that led to confusion. Luckily the South had just as much trouble with communication errors to make this a fair fight. It was back and forth til the Confederates brought in reinforcements and drove the North back, but the Confederates are now in search of a new general. This was the first of many casualty ending battles to go on. -

Battle Of Shiloh After the Confederates retreated, the union took time to wait for reinforcements and regroup to prepare for the next step in this war. This was just what the Confederates needed to plan a surprise attack. After a few delayed days, the Confederates took the Union by surprise surrounding them entirely. The Union finally brought in extra troops just in time, forcing the Confederates to stop and regroup. -

Union General, Pope, thought that the Confederates had retreated from their side of the line, but when they crossed they were surpsrised to see the Confederates laying in wait. The Union retreated. -

Battle Of Antietam Hard and deadly battles were fought for days. Confederates sent in all of their troops while Union held back 2/3s of theirs. At night, each army tended to the wounded and where the Union could have finished the war then and there with one surprise attack, they held back and won the battle slowly. Battle Of Chancellorsville The Confederate general and lieutenant came up with a master plan to outsmart the Union. While the lieutenant snuck around the back with around 30,000 men... General Lee took 13,000 soldiers to hold off the front. When the surprise attack came, those men rushed through the trees to attack. Unfortunately, General Jackson, fell wounded to the fire mistaken by his own men. -

The second day the Confederates surrounded the Union who was hiding in the hills, but the third day was the costliest. The famous "Picket's Charge" ended many lives for the Confederates. This is the most famous battle of the Civil War. -

Battle Of Chattanooga Thinking the Confederates were withdrawling troops and sending them elsewhere, the Union started a battle to overtake their headquarters and delay them. Union took over Lookout Mountain on the second day forcing Confederates back to defend other land. Union over ran the pits of Chattanooga and took over on the third day. This was an opening for a Union invasion of the South. -

Battle Of Cold Harbor The Union was ready to attack this morning but was missing many of those soldiers from the night march that were helping elsewhere. To add to the confusion, the fog and conditions around them made the comunication errors multipy. And to add a third and final negative level, the trenches built by Confederates were human death traps for Union when bombed. Important because it was a useless battle. -

Lee Surrenders
Lee Surrenders Wanting to avoid more bloody battles, Grant reached out to Lee and asked for surrender. Not wanting to admit defeat to his enemy, Lee declined. Only after it was clear that almost all the Confederates supplies were gone, Lee was willing to surrender. On this date, Lee and Grant wrote letters of nogotiation. This was the battle end of the Civil War. -
Lincoln Shot
Lincoln Shot Linocln was shot in the back of the head while attending a theater. He was shot by John Wilkes Booth who was a supporter of the Confederates. He died a long painful death which was the intention entirely. This is important becasue this was the official end to the Civil War era.
