Police killed more than 40 black and white Republicans and wounded more than 150 as well. The riot took place outside the Mechanics Institute in New Orleans as black and white delegates attended the Louisiana Constitutional Convention. -

The former Union general becomes the 18th president of the United States of America. Ulysses S. Grant from Illinois beat he's opponent Horatio Seymour from New York. -
