  • Battle of the Bulge

    The Battle of the Bulge, also known as the Ardennes Offensive, was the final German offensive campaign against the Soviets which took place from 16 December 1944 to 25 January 1945. The germans did not succeed, the Allies were then able to begin to invade Germany. Germany lost valuable resources and suffered 100,00 casualties
  • Battle of Iwo Jima

    America had tried to bomb Japan but lacked fuel. So they wanted to invade Iwo jima because it was closer to Japan. On February 19, 1945, marines landed on Iwo Jima. They did not know the island was covered in ash from volcanoes and Japanese had built tunnels under it. The marines crawled inland, attacking the Japanese bunkers with flamethrowers and explosives. More than 6,800 marines were killed capturing the island but America did succeed in doing so
  • Firebombing Japan

To help the B-29s hit their targets, he ordered them to drop bombs filled with napalm—a type of jellied gasoline. The bombs could explode and start fires. This meant, even if the B-29s missed, the fire would still be effective

    America did not think Japan would surrender till all of it was invaded so the next step was Okinawa.American troops landed on Okinawa on April 1, 1945.The Japanese troops took up positions in the island’s rugged mountains. To dig the Japanese out of their bunkers, the American troops had to fight their way up slopes against constant machine gun and artillery fire. More than 12,000 American soldiers, died during the fighting, but by late June, 1945, Okinawa had finally been captured.

  • Bombing of Nagasaki

    3 days after Hiroshima, The United States dropped another atomic bomb, code-named “Fat Man,” on the city of Nagasaki, killing between 35,000 and 74,000 people.
  • V-J Day

    The same day the bombing of nagasaki occurred, the Soviets joined the war. Faced with the shock of this Japans Emperor Hirohito ordered his government to surrender. On August 15, 1945—V-J Day—Japan surrendered. This marked the end of WW2 for all of the world.
