    The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were done in order to end the very end of WW2 (the pacific theater). It could have ended without the bombs but many many lives would have been lost.
    During the cold war the main difference here was that there were no nuclear weapons used there were only threats because of MAD (mutually assured destruction). MAD is where if they launch nukes then we will nuke them back and no one wins.

    The reason that we go in into the cold war was that we were trying to "contain communism" and keep it from spreading further. This was shortly after WW2 and the berlin wall was erected.

The US then proceeded to blockade Cuba from all coming and going sea traffic demanding that the soviets take all nucellar weapons off of Cuba and none ever be returned.
