    World War I
    In 1914 the world war I started but USA wanted to stay neutral because it was a european conflict. On april 1917 Congress gave permission for the USA to enter the war to help Britain and the allies after to american boats were sunk. The USA fought for only a few months but with a very heavy loss of life.

    Wall Street Crash

    During the 1920s many americans became rich very quickly by buying stocks and shares on the New York Stock Exchange in Wall Street. They kept them for a short time and then sold them at a profit. When the price of these stocks and shares fell in 1929,many people lost their money and buisnessmen didn't have enough money to run their companies. the great depression, a period of great period of poverty followed and in 1933 president Roosvelt started a recovery programme called the "New Deal"

    In 1941 Japanese warplanes attacked the US ships in Hawaii; the USA declared war on Japan. When the USA dropped two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, Japan surrendered.

    The Cold War

    After the end of the Second World War the ideals of communism and capitalism were very different and the USA formed a policy to help nations againts communism. A period of tension, suspicion and competition began between the United States and the Sovietic Union and their allies, especially in espionage, military, industrial, and technological developmends, including the space race and the nuclear arms race. The Cold War finished in 1991.

    In 1964 the Civil Rights Act became law. It aimed to stop discrimination on grounds of race, colour, religion, nationality.

    Vietnam

    The USA was involved in a long war in Vietnam beetween 1964 and 1975. Beetween 2 and 5 million Vietnamese died, many of whom were civilians. Even today people ask the question "Why?". Some justify it as a fight against communism while others consider it a terrible disgrace. The war ended in 1975 when Saigon fell to the communism.

    Memorial Plaza
    Memorial Plaza is a park where people can remember the victims of 11 september. There are two square pools with waterfallls where the Twins Towers stood. The names of the victims are around the pools. The park is very big, with 400 hundred trees. In the park, there's a National Museum. The museum contains objects and pictures to remember the victims and survivors of the 11 september. It also includes "The Survivors' Stairway". This is an original stairway from the Twin Towers.

    11 September attacks and consequences
    On 11 September terrorists hijacked four passenger aeroplanes and crashed them into the World Trade Center in New York, the US Defence Department- the Pentagon- in Washington, D.C. and into a field in Pennsylvania. Osama Bin Laden, a very rich man from Saudi Arabia who used much of his money to promote terrorist activities, was suspected of planning the attacks and hiding in Afghanistan.

    In 2001 the USA attacked Afghanistan.In 2003 on 20 march the United States led the missile attacks on Baghdad at the start of a campaign of to the feat the iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.More than 40 countries supported the invasion but the closest ally was Great Britain. between january 3 and april 12 2003 a lot of people all over the world took part in protests against the Iraq war.

    Ground Zero
    The 11 september attack left a big hole in the centre of Mnhattan. This hole was called "Ground Zero" and it quickly became a symbolic place. Every year, on 11 september, families of the victims, survivors and other New York residents go to memorial ceremonies and they remember the victims of the attack.
