first cast-iron plow

Charles Newbold invented the first cast-iron plow. At first people were cautious to use the new tool. People thought it poisoned the soil. But after seeing that the plow did better work at moving the soil and was much more stronger than a regular wood plow. The plow cut the soil up and down.It also made work go alot faster.

MCcormick reaper

imageInvented from Cyrus Hall to cut down small grain crops. It replaced the manual cutting of crops with Scythes and Sickles. The mechanical reaper was developed to cut down wheat more quickly and effeciently. It was a horse drawn machine used for harvesting grain.

john deere makes steel plows

In 1837 John deere had an idea that a steel plow can help farmers plow the fields a lot faster. The steel plow allows farmers to plow deeper and let them plant all different kinds of plants. But the most important thing is that the steel plow is way more stronger than the cast iron plow.

grain drill patented

But with the drill this machine places the seeds right in the ground and distributes them evenly which makes the perfect rows you see in farms. The machine also made time go a lot faster when planting seeds, it made it twice as faster.

first grain elevator

imageJoseph Dart invented the grain elevator in 1842. This contraption helped the storage of grain for transportation. Steam boats would unload the grain on the elevator and put it into temporary storage bins. The next boat could then pick up grains and deliver them elsewhere.

mowing machine

imageThe mowing machine was made in 1844. It helped people mow down the grains a lot quicker to be picked up rather than be cut down by hand. This machine saves time and money. It makes it go twice as fast than cutting it by hand. The mower was pulled by a horse with sharp blades would cut the grains.

imageIn Utah the ground is very dry, so they came up with irrigation and it is when you bring water from sea or lake and use it to water crops. This allows them to farm even on the dry desserty terraiin in Utah. Now all farmers use this as a way to farm and water. It has revolutionized farming.

Glidden barbed wire patent

imageBarbed wire was made by Joseph Glidden in 1874. This was a cheap way to make fencing for ranchers. Before ranchers had to buy less land cause they couldnt fence it. Barbed wire is a cheap way to fence the land, and keep the cattle in your fields and keep the bad animals out.

But most importantly, it made it a lot faster than a horse pulling the machines. It nearly shortened the time by 3X faster than with oxen or horse pulling.

imageThese biotech crops are genetically modified to repel insects and weeds. These chemicals are sprayed on with a place that flies over the field and drops the chemicals onto the farmers crops. This repels weeds and harmful insects from eating the plants and killing the crops.
