Prince Henry The Navigator
Son of the king of Portugal, had heard from African merchants about discoveries of gold there. He also hoped they would find a route to the far east. in the early 1400's Henry set up the first European school for navigators in sagres portugal. Henry worked with others to design and build better ships. Henry sent parties of exprers south along Africa's west cost. In Africa, the portuguguese explorers found gold dust, ivory, and poepel whom they enslaved. -

In 1473 the equator was crossed. In 1487, Baratolomeu Dias readied ships for a long, hard voyage. Arter the storm ended, Dias went on with out knowing his ships had been blown around the tip of the continent. The tip of the coninent is now know as the southern tip of Africa the Cape of Storms. -

Christopher Columbus, the son of a weaver, was a skilled navigator from Genoa Italy. Columbus set sail from Spain in August, 1492 with tree small ships the Nina the Pinta and the Santa Maria. Christopher spent several months sailing around . On Christmas Eve, the Santa Maria ran around on a reef and was wrecked. He returned from his last voyage in 1504. -
