    What did this act do? British government banned colonists from settling west of the Appalachian mountains.
    Colonial Response: Colonists continued to move west into the
    forbidden territory- further undermining the British authority
  • Sugar Act

    What did this act do? revised duties on sugar,coffee,tea,wine, and etc. expanded jurisdiction of vice admiralty courts.
    Colonial Response: several assemblies protest taxation for revenue.

    What did this act do? This act prohibited American colonies from issuing their own currency, angering many American colonists.

    What did this act do? printed documents(deeds,newspapers, marriage licenses,etc.) ) issued only on special stamped paper purchased from stamp distributors (direct tax)
    Colonial Response: riots in the cities; collectors were forced to resign , Stamp Act Congress (October 1765)

    What did this act do? The British further angered American colonists with the Quartering Act, which required the colonies to provide barracks and supplies to British troops.
    Colonial Response: Most colonial legislatures refused to pay for
    supplies as required by the Quartering Act

    What did this act do? It repealed the Stamp Act
    Colonial Response: They were happy, and were rejoiced.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    What did this act do? A group of soldiers surrounded by an unfriendly crowd opened fire, killing three Americans and fatally wounding two more. A violent uprising was avoided only with the withdrawal of the troops to islands in the harbor. The soldiers were tried for murder, but convicted of less crimes.
    Colonial Response: Bitter towards the government for taxing them, colonists threw snowballs at guards stationed in Boston, and the soldiers fired out into the crowd killing five people.
  • Townsend Act

    What did this act do? To help pay the expenses involved in governing the American colonies, Parliament passed the Townshend Acts, which initiated taxes on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea.
    Colonial Response: colonists protest "taxation without representation" and organize a new boycott of imported goods.
  • Tea Act

    What did this act do? By reducing the tax on imported British tea, this act gave British merchants an unfair advantage in selling their tea in America. American colonists condemned the act, and many planned to boycott tea.
    Colonial Response: colonist in Boston rebel, dumping 18,000 pounds of East India Company tea into Boston Harbor
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    What did this act do? When British tea ships arrived in Boston harbor, many citizens wanted the tea sent back to England without the payment of any taxes. The royal governor insisted on payment of all taxes. On December 16, a group of men disguised as Indians boarded the ships and dumped all the tea in the harbor.
    Colonial Response:Angry about the taxes,disguised colonists went aboard three ships and dumped 342 whole crates of british tea. Tea was eventually boycotted throughout the colonies
  • Coercive Acts

    Coercive Acts
    What did this act do? Parliament passed several acts to punish Massachusetts. The Boston Port Bill banned the loading or unloading of any ships in Boston harbor. The Administration of Justice Act offered protection to royal officials in Massachusetts, allowing them to transfer to England all court cases against them involving riot suppression or revenue collection.
    Colonial Response: Boycotts and First Continental Congress to petition King George.
