El Papa Latinoamericano
Pope Francis's extreme oppennes to change and relative disregard for tradition is perhaps most evident in his own origins. He is the first non-European pope in history, and Jesuit, as well. Despite breaking these boundaries, he has been a powerful leader, reveling in the change, and steering the Vatican in a new direction. Instead of attempting to hide his difference, he revels in it, and goes even further in the changes he makes to the Catholic church. -
"I'll just take the bus with the rest of the guys"
Pope Francis's humility is paired with a self-deprecating sense of humor. He does not think lowly of himself, however, he acknowledges that he is not defined by a title, and by poking fun at the traditional trappings of popheood, better expresses this ideal. His affable "may God forgive you" (referring to the cardinals electing him Pope) is remembered as a shining example of this. -
"Our church doors should always be open"
The Pope shook up Church hierarchy by assembling a legion of advisors to help him with policy. This is a departure from the traditional power wielded by the pope, and is representative of a new power structure more representative of the real Catholic spirit. The Pope accepted his power once they nominated him, however, he never oversteps his bounds, and is aware of the need for leaders who can use their power wisely. Despite his control and authority, he steers, and isn't a tyrant. -
"If I, your Lord and teacher ..."
Pope Francis's incredible commitment to his values and commitment are evident in the time when he washed the feet of disabled residents and prisoners, including non-Christians and women. This radical departure from tradition represents his devotion to the teachings of Jesus Christ and his own humility. The levels of tolerance demonstrated and his aim for equality show a principled, if radical, approach. -
"They are excommunicated from the Catholic Church"
The Pope, living in the vatican, acknowledged the problems of his residence when he used the strongest language to date to excommunicate members of the Italian mafia. Claiming they were examples of the "adoration of evil", the Pope did not sacrifice personal values simply because of the possibly repercussions. The Mafia, a powerful force and notorious for their use of violence and crime, are not people with which you deal casually. This is an example of a calculated, effective, risk. -
"Who am I to judge?"
As Pope, Pope Francis must clearly have some well-developed spiritual, moral, and ethical beliefs in line with Catholic teaching. However, in departing from traditional doctrine and refusing to condemn homosexuality, he is also demonstrating personal beliefs aligned with a quest for equality and tolerant behavior. This is a clear example of courage, since being a public figure, it would have been easier and safer to stick to traditional beliefs, but he opted to support his own vision instead. -
The New Popemobile
Pope Francis, instead of driving a luxury car, demonstrates his commitment to humility by driving a Ford Focus. This demonstrates his ability to Think Big, because instead of focusing on his power and internal church politics, he recognizes his position in the eyes of God. This is a very Catholic form of thinking big, since it involves a more large and spiritual view on creation.
